Abstract:

Spanning seven generations, the history of Western Learning of the Huang family serves as a microcosm of the cultural exchange between China and the West during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The first generation, Huang Zongxi (1610-1695), devoted a decade to study the calendrical science and mathematics, though his attitude toward Western Learning shifted slightly in his later years. The second generation, Huang Baijia (1643-1709), not only re-evaluated Chinese studies through the lens of Western Learning, but also integrated Western knowledge into the Confucian and official histories. By the time of the third generation, Huang Qianren (1694-1771), and the fifth, Huang Zhang (1728-1803), Western Learning had begun to wane within the family; however, it never ceased entirely, persisting instead as an undercurrent. Finally, the seventh generation, Huang Binghou (1815-1894), synthesized the “Old Western Learning” of the late Ming and early Qing with the “New Western Learning” of the late Qing, developing a hybridized and localized form of Western knowledge. A longitudinal view of the Huang family’s two-hundred-year engagement with Western Learning offers profound insights into the internal logic of Western knowledge’s evolution in China.
