學界對近代史上的香港與上海已進行了大量的研究，然而這些研究多為關於這兩座城市的線性歷史敘事，或者僅探討其演變過程中的某些突出特徵，如政治複雜性、殖民心態、文化混雜性等。為持續推進更深入的雙城記研究，香港大學中文學院及中國跨國史研究院與復旦大學歷史系合作，將於2026年8月20-22日在香港大學舉辦以“城市作為方法：近代香港與上海的跨國形成史 (The City as Method: The Transnational Making of Hong Kong and Shanghai, 1850-1950)”為題的國際學術研討會，本次會議旨在推動研究範式的轉變，從分散的“地方史”、“城市史”和“國別史”轉向強調關聯、流動、互動的跨國史研究。與會學者將突破以往學科範疇的局限，從跨域和共有歷史的視角考察這兩座東亞大都市在近代的發展，將兩者置於全球化網路與跨國流動的背景中，思考作為方法的“城市”如何促成了現代性、資本主義、殖民主義、民族主義、都市主義及多元文化主義等現象在近代史上的並生共存。

There have been a number of studies of Hong Kong and Shanghai in modern history, but the majority of them tend to focus on linear historical narratives of the two cities or some particular aspects of their historical evolvement, such as political complexity, colonial mentality, and cultural hybridity. To promote more advanced studies of these two modern metropolises, the School of Chinese and the Institute of Chinese Transnational History at the University of Hong Kong, in collaboration with the Department of History at Fudan University, will organize an international symposium “The City as Method: The Transnational Making of Hong Kong and Shanghai, 1850-1950” on August 20-22, 2026. It aims to foster a paradigm shift from the popular patterns of “local history”, “urban history”, and “national history” to a transnational history that highlight connections, flows, and interactions. Scholars who participate in the symposium will go beyond disciplinary conventions and boundaries and take the perspectives of cross-regional and shared histories to examine the modern developments of these two major cities in East Asian. Situating them in the context of global networks and transnational flows, the symposium provides a platform for scholars to explore how the “city”, as a methodological device, facilitated concurrent emergence of modernity, capitalism, colonialism, nationalism, urbanism, and multiculturalism in modern history.

The symposium will focus on the following related themes:

• New developments in theories and practices on transnational history
• Globalization/glocalization studies of Hong Kong, Shanghai, and other modern metropolises
• Comparative studies of development models between Hong Kong, Shanghai, and other cities
• Studies of trade, transport, and flows of goods between Hong Kong, Shanghai, and other cities
• Studies of urban institutions and ideologies (empire, colonialism, nationalism, revolution, etc.)
• Studies of urban agents, migrant communities, and social networks
• Studies of urban space, public sphere, and transnational identities
• Studies of urban planning, landscape, and heritage preservation
• Studies of urban life and popular culture
