School of Chinese – Obituary for Professor Chan Yiu‑nam
With our deepest condolences, we share the sad news of the passing of Professor Chan Yiu-nam (陳耀南), a renowned Hong Kong scholar and Honorary Professor of the School of Chinese at The University of Hong Kong. Professor Chan passed away on 8 March 2026 in Sydney, Australia, at the age of 85.
Professor Chan was an alumnus of the University of Hong Kong. He completed his Master of Arts in 1969 and Doctor of Philosophy in 1979, both in the Department of Chinese (now the School of Chinese). He studied under Professor Lo Hong-lit (羅忼烈) and Professor Ma Meng (馬蒙). From 1975 to 1996, he served as a full-time faculty member in the Department.
In the late 2000s, Professor Chan returned to the University as an Honorary Professor, where he offered courses and lectures to our students—including those enrolled in Master of Arts programme in Chinese Language and Literature—on the writing and appreciation of Chinese couplets and Du Fu’s poetry. His dedication to teaching and scholarship has left a lasting impact on generations of students, some of whom are now our current faculty members.
The School of Chinese mourns the loss of a respected scholar, devoted teacher, and cherished member of our academic community. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones.
