Abstract:

A significant phenomenon in the field of Chinese Philosophy research in both Chinese and English-speaking countries over the past three decades is the revival and re-evaluation of Xunzi studies. More importantly, Xunzi’s philosophy, especially his concept of li (rituals, social norms, or the rules for proper conduct), is presently becoming a practical orientation for making our lives more ethical and meaningful. Bearing this in mind and drawing upon the presenter’s own research, this lecture will explore the contexts in which the trend for reconstructing Xunzi studies has taken shape. It will also envision future roles for Xunzi research in the fields of ethics, social, and political science, and suggest practical contributions to our ethical lives.
