In my book Forget Chineseness (2017), which was a rejoinder to a paper written 20 years earlier, I argued that the new rise of China had irrevocably politicized any neutral definition of it. In this paper, I wish to return to its epistemic roots to evaluate other recent literature in this field in order to articulate the geopolitics of cultural identification, especially in relation to the diverging contexts of Hong Kong, Taiwan and elsewhere. In short, the focus will be less on the semantics of Chineseness, as though objective, than the pragmatics of subjective construction and their processual ramifications.
