Empires of the Sinophone

2017-2018 School of Chinese Seminar

Empires of the Sinophone

Professor Shu-mei Shih

Friday October 13, 4:00-5:30pm; Rm730 Run Run Shaw Tower
Language: English

Building on the essay, “The Concept of the Sinophone,” this lecture will consider how Sinophone studies addresses the intersection of multiple empires and must be seen in relation to other imperial language studies that are both European and non-European. Empires not only competed and colluded with each other, they also imitated each other. They sometimes co-existed over the same locales and at other times followed each other in sequence. For instance, a study of Sinophone Vietnam is not complete without consideration of French colonialism as well as American aggression, in addition to the historical reality of Vietnam having been a Chinese colony for one thousand years, at least according to official Vietnamese history. This and other configurations of inter-imperiality structurally inform the multilingual, multiethnic, and multicultural communities of the Sinophone outside China and on the margins of China and Chineseness. Hence, Anglophone, Francophone, Japanophone, and other imperial language studies should not be taken as mere parallels, but rather as conjunctural or sequential formations of inter-imperiality. “Empires of the Sinophone” will address such inter-imperiality as a fundamental condition of Sinophone studies.

Professor Shih holds a fractional appointment as the Hon-yin and Suet-fong Chan Professor of Chinese in the School of Chinese at HKU and is a professor of Comparative Literature, Asian Languages and Cultures, and Asian American Studies at UCLA. She is the author of The Lure of the Modern: Writing Modernism in Semicolonoial China, 1917-1937 (2001), Visuality and Identity: Sinophone Articulations across the Pacific (2007), Against Diaspora: Discourses on Sinophone Studies (2017, in Mandarin Chinese), as well as the co-editor of, among other books,  Minor Transnationalism (2005; 2009), Creolization of Theory (2011; 2015), Comparative Racialization (a special issue of PMLA, 2008), Sinophone Studies: A Critical Reader (2013), Comparatizing Taiwan (2015), and Knowledge/Taiwan: On the Possibility of Theory in Taiwan (2016, in Mandarin Chinese).

Writing China in Global Literary History

2017/2018 School of Chinese Seminar Series

Writing China in Global Literary History

Professor Alexander Beecroft (University of South Carolina)

October 11, 2017 (Wed); 4:30-6pm; Rm 730, Run Run Shaw Tower

Language: English

World literature has thus far been largely a matter of pedagogy – anthologies for the classroom – and to a lesser extent of theory. But what about literary history? Is it possible to narrate a global literary history, and what would such a history look like? Would it be simply the (perhaps ungainly) sum of its parts: a Frankenstein’s monster stitched together from the national and linguistic literary histories which have already been written? Would it be a history of the worlds in which literature has circulated, and therefore primarily of those texts which have circulated outside expected boundaries? Would there be a single master-narrative of the ascent of humanity’s literary imagination, a narrative resembling the old “rise of the West” story, but rewritten to encompass the globe? Or might there be a more appealing alternative than any of these?

Whatever the case, an especially large and prominent section of the challenge lies in China, with its vast literary tradition extending over thousands of years and shaping the literature of its neighbors, themselves nations with large vernacular traditions of their own. But this interplay between an ancient classical tradition and its various vernacular offshoots (within and beyond the frontiers of imperial China) provides in fact a basis for comparison with other world regions, especially with South Asia and with the combined area of Europe and the Middle East – and, as I will show, a narrative link robust enough to connect these regions without flattening out obvious and vital differences.

Professor Beecroft teaches courses in Greek and Latin language and literature, ancient civilizations, literary theory, and the theory and practice of world literature at the University of South Carolina. His research interests include the literatures of Ancient Greece and Rome, pre-Tang Chinese literature (i.e. before AD 600), as well as current debates about world literature. He is the author of Authorship and Cultural Identity in Early Greece and China: Patterns of Literary Circulation (2010) and An Ecology of World Literature: From Antiquity to the Present Day (2015). He is currently working on his third book A Global History of Literature (under contract with Johns Hopkins UP).

All are welcome!

Various versions of Mandarin were prevalent in the Qīng dynasty. They can be roughly classified into a northern and southern form of Mandarin, both of which were widely accepted in China in the 18th and 19th centuries, with both considered to be equally valid and both widely spoken. For example, the scholar Lǐ Rǔzhēn 李汝珍 (c. 1763–1830) a native of Běijīng and author of the novel Jìng huā yuán (鏡花緣) even played the role of advocate for embracing both kinds of Mandarin. This situation created the backdrop for the mixed standard for the first version of the National Pronunciation (Guóyīn 國音) established in 1913 that came to be known as Lánqīng Guānhuà 藍青官話. It is a state of affairs that is largely forgotten today with the general acceptance of a single Mandarin standard throughout the Chinese-speaking world. But the historical embrace of linguistic diversity is fascinating and well worth remembering.

This talk discusses the origin and nature of Chinese poetic prosody. Shen Yue is widely believed to have created the poetic metrical theory of si sheng ba bing (four tones and eight defects) and divided the four tones into ping (level tone) and ze (oblique tone) categories, thus forming the binary contrast prosodic system in Chinese regulated-style verse. Victor Mair and Tsu-lin Mei have further argued that the rules of the “eight defects” and the concept of ping-ze contrast were designed by Shen Yue under the influence of Sanskrit prosodic theory. The most challenging puzzle that remains for scholars in the field is to understand why Shen Yue and the other Six Dynasties poets failed to follow their own prosodic theory in their composition practices. The rise of regulated-style verse in the history of Chinese literature remains something of a mystery. Through a case study of Shen Yue’s poems, this talk aims to solve the puzzle by exploring: (1) the nature of poetic prosody, (2) tonal prosodic patterns in Chinese regulated verse, (3) problems with the Sanskrit origins hypothesis of Chinese tonal prosody, and (4) the pathways of Chinese poetic metricalization from the Six Dynasties (222–589) to the Tang dynasty (618–907).

Yang Liangyao’s Mission to the Abbasids in 785

Professor Angela Schottenhammer
The University of Salzburg

Date & Time: 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., Monday, July 17, 2017
Venue: Room 730, Run Run Shaw Tower, Centennial Campus, HKU

This presentation introduces the information provided in a tomb stele (shendao zhi bei 神道之碑) of a Chinese eunuch, a certain Yang Liangyao 楊良瑤 (736–806), that will be comparatively analysed against the background of the political landscape under the Chinese Emperor Dezong 德宗 (Li Gua 李適; 742–805; r. 780–805), and more specifically against the backdrop of the court’s politics in the face of Tibetan aggression. The stele inscription records the biography of Yang and claims that he was sent as an envoy to the Abbasids (Heiyi dashi 黑衣大食; lit. “Black-dressed Tajik”, i.e. the Arabs) by Emperor Dezong in 785. It seems that the mission was intended to ask the Arabs for military support against the Tibetans. The talk intends to frame Yang’s mission within a broader context and analyse the factors that may have prompted this trip. In particular, I want to address the question of why such an important diplomatic mission is neither mentioned in any other sources, and the question of why it has never been brought up in academic discourse. Although a clear indication that this trip even took place at all is absent in both Chinese and Middle Eastern historiography, there is no plausible reason to automatically rule out the possibility that the mission was carried out, or to assume that somebody might have faked such a story on an epigraphic document like this tomb stele. Historical circumstances and a comparison with information provided in other sources rather suggest that the mission was sent, perhaps even successfully, and there are also quite a few political reasons as to why the mission and information pertaining to Yang Liangyao himself were not included in the official accounts. The article will argue that particular historical circumstances suggest that his mission was very plausible; and that the decision to send him to the Abbasid caliphate to ask the Arabs for assistance in pushing back the Tibetans was at least in line with Emperor Dezong’s foreign policy strategy.

Biological evolution is random in nature, capable of optimizing a particular function of a sub-system S but unable to guarantee that S as a whole be functionally flaw-less. If the core of the human language faculty (aka Universal Grammar) is a set of linguistically dedicated functions of the brain as Chomsky suggests, one is logically prompted to askwhether UG has functional flaws or gaps. This work does exactly that. Starting with the serial verb constructions (SVC) in Chinese, we proceed to prove that UG indeed contains one such functional gap: it is not programmed to structurally put together two bare verbal projections of which neither one is a thematic argument of the other. When this gap interferes with sentence-production, a general cognitive function such as iconicity is called in to help out, interacting with UG to yield a set of facts characteristic of SVC.

Did changes in relationships and networks between the eleventh and thirteenth centuries imply a broader shift in the overall structure of imperial Chinese society? In this presentation, I revisit the question of how we can understand broader changes in the imperial social order during the so-called Tang-Song transition by examining the relationship between different kinds of networks. I start with a review of earlier scholarship on elite marriage networks during the Tang and Song periods. On the basis of my own recent monograph and ongoing research on factional politics, I then move on to the question of how communication and political networks during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries contributed to a lasting preference for a unified imperial state amongst provincial elites. I will conclude with some observations on how communication and political networks interacted with evolving marriage networks and explain how interactions between such different networks shaped the late imperial socio-political order.

著有《義旨之爭:南宋科舉規範之折衡》(中譯本), Information, Territory, and Networks: The Crisis and Maintenance of Empire in Song China。 Knowledge and Text Production in an Age of Print

Technology of Memory: How We Remember and How We Forget

The widespread use of the Internet has created a virtual space serving as a venue for ordinary Chinese citizens to post their own recollections of their experiences during the Mao era. Against this memory boom in China, I will set up the “occasion” for creating a new interpretive frame to explore tensions of different memories of a shared traumatic historical moment. I foreground this question: Who remember and why do they remember? Survivor-witnesses give their testimonies because the magnitude of the historical event reaches beyond those survivor-witnesses to many more who perished in the event. This makes their testimonies necessarily an act of ethical remembrance bound by heavy moral responsibility. How memory is utilized thus points to the technology and the ethical dimension of memory.

Lingchei Letty Chen 陳綾琪 (PhD, Columbia University) is Head of the Chinese Section and Associate Professor of Modern Chinese Literature at the Washington University in St. Louis. Her earlier work and publications center on identity politics among various Chinese communities in the world, such as the Chinese mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong, the Chinese American communities, and Chinese diaspora in the West. Her first book Writing Chinese: Reshaping Chinese Cultural Identity (2006) will soon be available in Chinese from Fudan University Press (《書寫華人:全球華人文化認同的斷裂與重建》). In addition to identity politics, she has embarked on memory studies and trauma theories and has combined the two with issues concerning identity.  Her monograph Memory’s Shores: Remembrance of the Mao Years, currently under review by Harvard University Press, explores how generational memory functions in a narrative of trauma and how the signification of such interplay bears witness to historical calamities occurred during the Mao era. Aside from the aforementioned research, she also has extended interests in Sinophone studies and topics related to Chinese global cities such as Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Taipei, and Singapore.

During the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, the Mongol empire ruled much of Eurasia.  This global moment ushered in unprecedented levels of political, cultural, economic, military, and ethnic integration.  The Mongol empire’s collapse in the mid-fourteenth century posed enormous challenge and opportunity to the cluster of new polities that emerged in its wake.  Polities and peoples in much of Eurasia wrestled with how to understand and exploit the legacy of the Mongol empire, which included memories of subjugation and conquest, continent-spanning institutional practices, networks of trade, broad diasporas, and a deeply altered geopolitical landscape.  To persuade audiences at home and abroad of its political legitimacy and win their allegiance, Ming court developed its own version of the Mongols’ rise, glory, and irreversible fall, that is, a Chinggisid narrative.  This talk will explore key facets of the early Ming court’s Chinggisid narrative and what they reveal about commensurability among early modern Eurasian courts and the Ming court’s strategies for advancing its interests by controlling and propagating its version of the recent past.

Smoke and Mirrors, Unpicking Some Problems of Chinese to English Literary Translation

Nicky Harman

Date and Time: June 20 (Tuesday); 3:30-5:00pm
Venue: Room 730, Run Run Shaw Tower
Language: English

In this talk, I will focus on unpicking a single paragraph by author Jia Pingwa, from his novel Happy ( 《高興》) which I have just finished translating. By looking at my drafts and the final version, I will discuss some challenges such as sentence structure, dialect and (nick)names, as well as broader issues, including cultural references, implicit and explicit. Finally, I will consider the author’s intentions for this paragraph and discuss with the audience whether I have succeeded in recreating the same effect in English.

Nicky Harman lives in the UK. She is co-Chair of the Translators Association (Society of Authors, UK). She taught on the MSc in Translation at Imperial College until 2011 and now translates full-time from Chinese. She focuses on fiction, literary non-fiction, and occasionally poetry, by authors such as Chen Xiwo, Han Dong, Hong Ying, Dorothy Tse, Xinran, Xu Xiaobin, Yan Ge, Yan Geling and Zhang Ling. She has won a Mao Tai Cup People’s Literature Chinese-English translation prize, and first prize in the 2013 China International Translation Contest (Chinese-to-English section). She co-runs the “Read Paper Republic” project, posting and promoting free-to-view short stories translated from Chinese. She organizes translation-focused events, mentors new translators and judges translation competitions. Of the several thousand Chinese eunuchs for whom we have names, only a few are not ridiculed as negative characters in Chinese history and popular culture. In opera they are most often seen in chou 丑 or clown roles, but in two newly edited Beijing operas, Zheng He 鄭和 (1371-1433) and Chen Lin 陳琳are cast in principal and principled roles. In Tianjin Qingnian jingjv tuan’s Zheng He xia xiyang 鄭和下西洋,Meng Guanglu 孟廣祿 (1948-) plays the role of Zheng He, who ventured out on seven naval voyages to as far as the east coast of Africa. In Shanghai jingjv tuan’s Limao huan taizi 狸貓換太子 Chen Shaoyun 陳少雲 (1948-) performs the role of Chen Lin, who sacrificed his life saving the infant, the future Song Renzong 宋仁宗 (r.1010-1963). The main objective of this paper is to compare and contrast the representation of the historical Zheng He and the fictional Chen Lin.

Li Shinan

Date and Time: April 28 2017 (Friday), 5:30-6:45pm
Venue: Room 730, Run Run Shaw Tower, Centennial Campus
Language: Putonghua

This talk focuses on Liang Qichao’s thinking on the issue of “body”, making a tentative exploration on the making and transformation of body discourse in China during late Qing and early Republic years. It argues that Liang aimed to build a kind of “nationalized body” since the age of Reform Movement, by the logic of “making a strong nation through building a strong human body”. Many of his articles concerned were composed during his “Discourse on the New Citizen” period. Yet a close examination shows there are two different ideas within his body thoughts—One is derived from the ideas of “self-sacrifice” (shashen), which involves a cult of martial prowess and various resources such as the spirit of chivalry (xiayi) from traditional Chinese culture and the bushidō (way of the warrior) discourse from Japan, and the other inherits the traditional Confucian “self-cultivation” (xiushen) thoughts as the antithesis. Based on Liang’s relevant works, this talk aims to analyze the differences and similarities between the two views of Liang, and to explore the knowledge transformation and culture reconstruction behind the body discourse.

Venue: Room 730, Run Run Shaw Tower, Centennial Campus

Discussion on the revival of Mohist studies in modern China has always attributed the emergence of Confucian scholars’ annotations of the Mozi since the middle of the Qing Dynasty to the inner logic behind the development of evidential scholarship during the reigns of Emperors Qianlong and Jiaqing. Grounded on relevant original sources, this talk presents the adverse political and military circumstances around 1781 resulted from the suppression of the Muslim revolt in Shaanxi province and the subsequent rehabilitation facing Bi Yuan during his office as the provincial governor. It points out that the intention behind Bi’s annotation of the Mozi was more than evidential scholarship: he was seeking a solution for statecraft in a classical work. On the one hand, the main reason behind the revolts by Muslims in Shaanxi and Gansu provinces during the Qing was the inappropriate handling of incidents related to the Muslims by officials who were intimidated by the robustness and recklessness of the Muslim. On the other hand, revolts broke out continuously because of the poor coordination between military and political administrations in the provincial government, the excessive reduction of the stationing army in the provinces as well as improper rehabilitation measures etc. By analysing Bi Yuan’s intention behind his annotation of the Mozi, this talk aims to refute the dichotomy between evidential scholarship and the scholarship of statecraft during the reigns of Qianlong and Jiaqing, and to reflect on the current paradigm of studying the scholarship of statecraft of late Qing.

Women and Literature in early Qing fiction Lin Lan Xiang

Date and Time: March 31, 2017 (Friday), 5:30-6:45pm
Venue: Room 730, Run Run Shaw Tower, Centennial Campus
Language: Putonghua

The early Qing fiction Lin Lan Xiang tells a story about the destinies of several women who live in a noble family. Even though the author appreciates their outstanding literary talent, the fiction implies that women’s literary talent is defined as a good thing only under certain circumstances. If a woman behaves inappropriately, her talent might bring harm to her. Firstly, if strangers saw a woman’s poems or paintings, there will be possibilities that she be molested. Secondly, when her talent overrides her morality, she wouldn’t be considered as a competent wife and mother any more, and could be estranged by her husband. Last but not least, Yan Mengqing’s death at an early age reflects the obsession of “talented women die young” in the history, and this obsession derived from the negative attitude towards women’s talent in traditional society.

The Book of Documents (Shang Shu) has been one of the most important classics of ancient Chinese literature and Confucian scriptures for more than two millennia. The author(s) and dating of Shang Shu, however, have long been debated. The transmission process of various versions of Shang Shu was particularly complex, and has long been a subject of controversy since the Han Dynasty. There have been more than 100 discoveries of bamboo and silk manuscripts in China since the 20th century, unearthing over 300,000 strips which contain substantial content. The Tsinghua Bamboo Strips were acquired by Tsinghua University in 2008. These manuscripts are believed to date from Chu state of the late Warring States period. Several texts in the Tsinghua bamboo strips can be correlated to the extant version of Shang Shu, including the “Jinteng”, “Yingao”, “Yinzhi”, “Baoxun”, and “FuYue zhi ming”, providing substantial and new resources and evidence for further researches on Shang Shu. By comparing the textual variations between the existing version of “Jinteng” with its excavated counterpart, my presentation aims to illustrate the value and significance of the Tsinghua bamboo strips in the studying of Shang Shu from historical, exegetical and philological perspectives.

The pre-Qin texts we see nowadays were heavily revised throughout the Han to Tang Dynasties. The original contents and language were not preserved. Since the Twentieth Century, plenty of materials like bamboo and silk manuscripts have been unearthed. Some texts from the excavated materials can be compared with the extant pre-Qin texts, for example, Laozi, Zhouyi (Classic of Changes), The Chapter Ziyi of Liji (Book of Rites) and The Chapter Jinteng of Shangshu (Book of Documents). They can be collated with the texts of the bamboo manuscripts of Guodian as well as the bamboo manuscripts collected by the Shanghai Museum and Tsinghua University. This seminar will focus on the textual variants between the pre-Qin texts and three bamboo manuscripts: Guodian, Shangbo and Tsinghua. By examining the pattern of negation of the textual variants, I will explore the diachronic changes of the classical Chinese grammar.

Delving into the Theory of Nature-Pneuma of Li Shangyin

Liu Qinghai

Date and Time: March 21, 2017 (Tuesday); 5:30-6:45pm
Venue: Room 730 Run Run Shaw Tower, Centennial Campus
Language: Putonghua

Theory of nature-pneuma describes Li Shangyin’s understanding about the origin of poetry, which lays a strong foundation for his poetics. It can be traced back to the theory of nature-pneuma used to explain the origin of things in pre-Qin dynasty. Liu Yuxi’s and Liu Zongyuan’s discussion on the relation between heaven and man offered an important background of Li’s theory, whereas Bai Juyi and Liu Yuxi’s literary thoughts about pneuma also inspired Li. As a Daoism-influenced aesthetic thought, theory of nature-pneuma is a significant supplement of the Confucian poetic education, which regards political education as the basic function of literature. This talk examines how Li used the theory to expound the impassioned and sad style of Yuan Jie’s works and to explicate the orthodox, instead of variant, essence of Yuan’s writing. It also argues that Li employed the theory to offer his ideas on Dao and the origin of literature that are different from those held by Han Yu and other writers of ancient-style prose. In short, the aesthetic ideas of advocating truth and following feelings embedded in the theory of nature-pneuma are key factors that have contributed to the thematic and stylistic uniqueness of Li’s writing, and helped form the characteristic of “expressing emotions” in Li’s poetry.

Abstract Influenced by the trend of reevaluating Chinese literature in twentieth century, more attentions has been paid to traditional-style writings in late Qing and early Republican eras. Current research primarily focus on writings by Song Poetry School and Qing loyalists, while studies on Nanshe group rely more on political and revolutionary perspectives. This talk examines Huang Jie (1873-1935)’s classical-style writings during his settlement in Republican Beijing, by investigating how classical-style poetry was used as a method of social practice and lyricism in modern era. Huang’s poetry well represented the daily life and sojourning experience in Republican Beijing, hence reflected the literati mentality and self-identity in the transformation period. Moreover, the significance of traditional literary form and classical-style writings in modern China is also discussed.

Abstract The style of Ci liaised closely with the popular culture and served practical functions such as sentimental expression, social intercourse and entertainment. However, the purpose of Ci had shifted from creating a convivial atmosphere for gatherings to social activities of, say, poetry clubs. Ci works even became the gifts that poets presented at celebratory feasts. This talk deals with Ke-Zhuang Liu, a renowned poet who flourished in the Southern Song Dynasty, with a special focus on his life and the self-image he manifested in his “Ci-poetry for Birthday Self-Congratulation.” The receivers of Ci-poetry for birthday congratulation had changed from the hosts to the Ci writers themselves, which implied that Ci-poetry had become a new literary form for expressing one’s sentiments and ambitions. This variant of Ci happened to be suitable for Liu to exude his bold and unconstrained temperament as well as to vent his grudges and wrath.

Abstract On the basis of about thirty letters addressed to Lü Xun in the fourteenth-century letter collection Epistolary Writings of the Central Plain, this presentation reconstructs the movement of Lü Xun and his epistolary network in the northern territories during the Jin-Yuan transition. It reveals how Lü Xun served as a bridge between two core groups of Confucian scholars in the early Yuan. Through an analysis of the content and historical context of various letters to Lü Xun, we can see how literati in the north conveyed requests and encouragements and supported each other during difficult times.

Abstract Gender identity was among the most controversial issues of the society and family in Western Han (206 BCE – 8 CE). In one historical episode a husband and a wife were equal, and in another, unequal. This paper argues that the twin tombs of Prince Liu Sheng (d. 113 BCE) and his wife, Dou Wan (d. ca. 109 BCE), comprehensively embody such a complex and nuanced relationship between a couple, both equal and hierarchical. In doing so, in light of contemporary literary accounts, this paper closely compares the architectural designs, types and distributions of burial objects, and body treatments in the tombs. Four major problems are discussed: (1) the different treatments of the male and female bodies emphasize the importance of maintaining gender distinction between the couple; (2) the mutual mirroring between the couple’s funerary architecture and burial objects reflects the notion of equality; (3) the overall hierarchy in material contents between the couple’s tombs demonstrates male superiority; (4) the wife maintains her distinction and power through political symbolism and religious imagery. This paper provides a material perspective on the social history of gender and complicated relationship of husband and wife as envisioned and practiced in Western Han and early imperial China.

COSMOPOLITANISM AND ITS SIGNIFICANCE TO CHINESE LITERATURE AND CULTURE

COSMOPOLITANISM AND ITS SIGNIFICANCE TO CHINESE LITERATURE AND CULTURE

DATE: FEB 9, 2017 (THURSDAY)
TIME: 4PM
VENUE: RM 4.34, RUN RUN SHAW TOWER, HKU

Abstract:
In current international academia, “cosmopolitianism” has once again become a heatedly debated topic. It appears frequently in the works of political philosophers and sociologists, and is often viewed by literary and cultural scholars as a perspective from which to analyze a given literary and cultural phenomenon. The appearance of cosmopolitanism and its reconstruction today have provided the phenomenon of globalization with a theoretical foundation and associated it with the old cosmopolitanism in history. Although chiefly a debate in international academia, cosmopolitanism is not so unfamiliar to Chinese intellectuals. Early in the beginning of the 20th century, there appeared a tendency of talking on cosmopolitanism in Chinese intellectual circles. But at the time China was both poor and backward, so calling for cosmopolitanism was nothing but following the road of overall Westernization. Today, China has become one of the biggest winners in the process of globalization. In this sense, taking on cosmopolitanism and even reconstructing it from a Chinese perspective will enable China, as a cultural giant, to make greater contributions to world civilization.

Wen Tsung-yao is a legendary figure in modern China. He was truly a chameleon in realpolitik because his political stance changed repeatedly. As he had been a collaborator with Japanese, historical comments on him are mainly negative. But in the last decade of Qing dynasty, he was highly prestigious as an official responsible for foreign affairs. In the early years of republican era, he was active in Chinese diplomacy. After 1920s he retired from politics and dedicated his energy to his personal enterprises. By the end of 1930s, he participated in politics again. At the time, the anti-Japanese atmosphere was violent, but he went the opposite way, joining the Chinese puppet-government of Japan. He always made undisguised comments with strong pro-Japanese inclination, and at the same time opposing the rule of Chiang Kai-shek. In many occasions these provoked the anger of Chinese. After the victory, he faced trial for collaboration, and died in great despair. Wen Tsung-yao was truly a celebrity of late Qing and early republican eras, but the information related to him was scattered and full of inconsistency. Until now, there is no biographical research on Wen Tsung-yao, and we are still lacking a clear understanding about him. This paper attempts to reconstruct the life and career of Wen Tsung-yao by using various unexplored primary sources.

Evolving from what Lord Palmerston (1784-1865), British foreign secretary during the First Opium War, famously labelled as ‘a barren rock with nary a house upon it’ into an international metropolis has been the favourite story of Hong Kong. This historical narrative has been, however, put to immense challenge by the massive archaeological findings at the construction site of To Kwa Wan station of the MTR Shatin-Central Link from November 2012 to December 2013. Are the recently unearthed cultural relics related in one way or another to the last emperors of the Song Dynasty (976-1279), as told in generations of the local folklores? Can they retrieve a lost chapter of pre-colonial history of Hong Kong? This presentation is an attempt to reconstruct the rarely known history of Hong Kong in the Song Dynasty with extensive references to the Song sources and latest archaeological findings.

In late Ming Dynasty, Jesuit missionaries initiated a movement to transmit European scientific knowledge to China. By establishing fame and social status, the Jesuits hoped that Christianity would be better received by Chinese society. As the solar and lunar eclipse prediction made by Qin Tian Jian (The Astronomical Bureau) were found to be inaccurate, Xu Guangqi worked with the Jesuits to compile Chongzhen Lishu (Chongzhen Reign Treatises on Calendrical Astronomy), which adopted European astronomical methods for planetary position computation. Chongzhen Lishu incorporates the content of various European astronomical publications with scanty citation, therefore causing a lot of difficulty in identifying its European sources. Now the digital archives in major libraries of the world are offering substantial primary literature to this field of research. By cross-examining text and figures, discoveries have been made regarding what kinds of European astronomical publications were consulted when Chongzhen Lishu was compiled. Scholars in early Qing dynasty had identified ambiguities and even contradictions in the content of Chongzhen Lishu. The extent to which Jesuits altered the original text should also be investigated, thereby making a fair assessment to Jesuits’ contribution in the transmission of European knowledge to China.

Film as Soft Power and Hard Currency: The Sino-Hollywood Courtship

Film as Soft Power and Hard Currency:
The Sino-Hollywood Courtship

Professor Ying Zhu
The City University of New York

Date and Time: January 23, 2017 (Monday); 5:30-6:45pm
Venue: Room 730, Run Run Shaw Tower, Centennial Campus, HKU

My talk examines two periods when Hollywood dominates the Chinese market, one during the Republican era (1912-49), one since 1994 when Hollywood returned to the Chinese market after decades of absence due to a Chinese state enacted ban in 1950. I trace Hollywood’s historical China dominance while simultaneously sketching out the evolution of Chinese cinema from its infancy under the shadow of imports to its current global economic and cultural ambition. Framing the Sino-Hollywood engagement as a case of political, cultural and economic rivalry and cooptation, I elaborate on how economic interest intersects with political posturing and how film serves as a battlefield for cultural influence as China seeks to flex its growing economic muscle to promote soft power globally.

Ying Zhu is a Professor of Cinema Studies in the Department of Media Culture at the City University of New York.
