摘要 Abstract:
How does a translation major evolve into a career in legal advocacy? In this talk, Mr Ken Hung, an HKU Translation alumnus and currently a practising barrister, shares his journey from parsing texts to the Hong Kong Bar. He explores how translation training uniquely sharpens courtroom skills, from deconstructing texts to detecting nuances in witnesses' evidence. Amidst the rise of increasingly accessible AI, he examines the shifting landscape for language students, sharing insights on how to navigate toward specialised niches. Finally, he discusses the essential attributes required for those considering a successful transition from the humanities to law.

講者簡介 About the Speaker:
Ken Hung was called to the Hong Kong Bar in 2022 following pupillages in diverse practice areas. He holds a BA in Translation from HKU, alongside a JD and PCLL from CUHK. Ken’s interest in law was sparked by a legal interpreting course he took during his undergraduate studies. He subsequently transitioned to legal practice, drawing on his linguistic training to decipher legal texts and evidence. He is building a broad civil and criminal practice with emphasis on general civil disputes, Employees' Compensation (EC) and Personal Injuries (PI) claims, and criminal law.
